The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

 #4: Gods of Annihilation

Writer: Alan Moore
Artist: Kevin O'Neill
Colors: Benedict Dimagmaliw
Lettering: William Oakley

Cover date: November 1999

Plot summary:
Three League members - Mina, Quatermain and Griffin - have entered the giant hall where the evil Doctor is building a big airship. They try to remain unrecognized, which is not so easy for Mina and Quatermain, but of course no problem for Griffin, the Invisible Man. He's asking Dr. Jekyll for help - Jekyll is getting pretty nervous and turns into Mr. Hyde who brutally invades the plant and fights the Doctor's Chinese helpers. While everybody is involved in fighting, Mina and Quatermain have time to find the Cavorite.

The mission ends with a spectacular escape through the tunnel's glass ceiling and through the river Thames where the team is picked up by Captain Nemo's Nautilus.

In the meantime, Griffin is secretly following Campion Bond who leads him to M, the head of the secret service. He doesn't want his identity to be revealed, but Griffin can see his face and learns his name: James.

Comments:
The main events of this action-packed issue are quite banal - the team of heroes fulfills its mission, which is standard comic book content.

What's more interesting is Moore's characterization of the team members: most of them are rather suspicious of each other, particularly Nemo is kind of an outsider.
